Idaho law professor serves in Kosovo as a legal specialist

This Friday, Patrick Costello, a professor at the University of Idaho College of Law, will finish his service as a legal specialist for the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) in Kosovo.

The ABA Initiative aimed to bring the rule of law to where it is most needed. Costello worked at the University of Prishtina with the law faculty to improve and institutionalize their trial advocacy and clinical programs. There he helped to implement recommendations made in 2008 by an ABA legal education assessment team.

“The purpose of the trial advocacy and clinical programs is to teach practical skills that students can use in representing clients in court,” Costello said.

Before leaving for Kosovo, Costello expressed his hope to strengthen a criminal defense and a civil clinic. For the clinics, he talked about co-author manuals and also put procedures into place to get the program institutionalized.

Another of Costello’s goals was to integrate the Serb and Albanian students, a major challenge at the university.
