Basic Information

Nestled within Iowa’s capital city, Drake Law is one of the oldest law schools in the country and only the second law school founded west of the Mississippi River.

preLaw magazine named Drake Law as a “Best Value Private Law School” for two years running and the school ranked No. 2 for practical training.

“From 1Ls attending the First Year Trial Practicum to 3Ls arguing before the Iowa Supreme Court, our students gain valuable practical experience right from the start of law school,” said Dean Ben Ullem. “Each of our faculty has actually practiced law and bring that expertise and experience into the classroom. That practical experience during law school leads to valuable and enriching careers for our alumni after graduation.”

Most astonishing, though, is its graduates’ high bar passage rate, boasting a 94.74 percent average, one of the highest in the region. And as the only law school in Des Moines, its students are granted direct access to opportunities, clerkships and internships in governmental and private practice settings. Alumni span across the U.S. and in several foreign countries as well.

It hosts the annual Dwight D. Opperman Lecture series, where numerous Supreme Court justices have delivered lectures on constitutional law.

Drake Law also runs a graduate law program open to eligible American and international students on both a full-time and part-time basis. Students pursue individualized courses toward a LL.M. degree. Alternatively, students who don’t hold a J.D. can pursue a Master of Jurisprudence degree in three separate fields.
