Basic Information
Religious Affiliation:

Ohio Northern University — Claude W. Pettit College of Law is one of the smallest law schools in one of the smallest towns in the U.S. Located in Ada, Ohio, the private school has fewer than 170 law students. That size leads to a high quality of life. It allows for unique collaboration in and out of the classroom and the opportunity for faculty to get to know every student. With a 7:1 student-to-faculty ratio, every student is guaranteed a personal legal education with individualized instruction. Students also have access to peer mentors as well as other academic support staff throughout their time in law school.

The personalized education results in a consistent high bar pass rate and job placement rate. It placed 90.3 percent of graduates in jobs within 10 months of graduation, a figure higher than the school's incoming LSAT credentials would otherwise predict.

The school also earned an A- for practical training in 2018. Every student who wants one is guaranteed a clinic or externship placement, and ONU strongly encourages students to take advantage of this. Clinic and externship placements are custom-made – instead of having a small number of limited-enrollment and narrowly defined clinics, ONU takes the time to find placements that fit an individual student’s interests.

Students also find the low cost of living in Ada to be an added benefit.

One unique program students can take advantage of is the J.D. in democratic governance and rule of law, which according to Bales, is the only program of its kind in the country.
