William Mitchell College of Law and Hamline School of Law merged in January 2016 to form Mitchell Hamline School of Law. The combined school is located on what used to be William Mitchell College of Law's campus.

The school is on the cutting edge when it comes to online learning. It started the first hybrid online and in-class J.D. program in the nation.

“We will offer a hybrid program featuring the best of both worlds,” said Mehmet Konar-Steenberg, associate dean for faculty, at the time the program launched in 2015. “We think it will appeal to those for whom the traditional law degree would be out of reach otherwise, either because they live too far away or have jobs that they want to keep while they are studying law.”

The school is big on flexibility, allowing for a wide range of students the opportunity to go to law school.

The school offers more practical externships than any other school in the Upper Midwest. That helped it secure an A- in preLaw magazine's ranking of the best schools for practical training. That, combined with its scheduling options and a robust scholarship program, make it a popular choice for students from all walks of life, the school notes.

Finally, it ranked 21st in the nation for the best facility.

Hamline brought into the merger a particularly strong dispute resolution program. The program was ranked 4th in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. It also had a strong commitment to experiential learning.
