Capital University offers summer dispute resolution courses

Capital University Law School is offering a Summer Dispute Resolution Institute program of weeklong intensive courses.

The program is open to lawyers, law school students and non-lawyers, and past students include professionals working in health care, law enforcement, education, corporations, and at non-profit organization.

“These are critical skills for lawyers,” said Floyd Weatherspoon, associate dean for dispute resolution programs at Capital University Law School. “A large percentage of client legal issues are resolved outside the courtroom using mediation, arbitration, negotiation and dispute resolution. These skills are also applicable in a broad range of other professional settings. Being trained in their use increases value to clients and employers.”

The program consists of eight weeklong courses that cover a variety of subjects. All courses are two credit hours, with the exception of the three-credit Divorce Mediation class. The courses also provide CLEs for practicing attorneys. The application deadline is July 1.  

Courses include:

July 21-25 (morning): Negotiation. Topics include choosing, planning and implementing appropriate negotiation strategies, as well as relevant ethical issues.

July 21-25 (afternoon): Labor and Employment Arbitration. Topics include state and federal arbitration laws and rules, major arbitration decisions, the mechanics of the arbitration process, and evidential and due process issues. This course includes a mock arbitration hearing and hands-on work writing a brief for arbitration and an arbitration opinion.

July 28-Aug. 1 (morning): Dispute Resolution. This course examines major alternatives to litigation for negotiation, mediation, arbitration and court-annexed procedures.

July 28-Aug. 1 (afternoon): Business Negotiation. This course is for students who have taken the earlier Negotiation course and want to apply that knowledge to the business world

Aug. 4-8 (morning): Mediation. This course examines mediation from the perspective of the mediator and the advocate.

Aug. 4-8 (afternoon): Health Care and Dispute Resolution. This course offers a framework for understanding dispute resolution in healthcare by providing a historical perspective on American healthcare's evolution to its present structure.

Aug. 11-15 (day-long): Divorce Mediation This course combines a thorough understanding of basic mediation skills with the substantive knowledge of the relevant issues on divorce, such as custody, visitation, support and property division.

Aug. 11-15 (afternoon): Mediating Workplace Disputes This course will expose students to various theoretical and practical approaches to mediating workplace disputes.
