Timing, after Western Michigan University Cooley Law School, formerly Thomas Cooley Law School, laid off a large number of faculty and staff the week after changing its name.

The law school has not released official numbers, but sources reported that as much as 50 percent of the staff received pink slips. Associate dean of external affairs James Robb told the Lansing City Pulse that the cuts were a “painful but necessary process.” The school has seen a 40 percent drop in enrollment during the past few years, and recently announced it would not offer first-year courses at its Ann Arbor campus, which is one of five campuses for the Michigan-based school.
