Five gift ideas for bar exam takers

By Ashley Heidemann

As the holidays approach, family and friends will likely ask what you want for a gift. While you’re studying for the bar, it’s probably hard to think of wants and needs outside the exam universe. However, there is no reason you can’t ask for bar exam related items as gifts! Given how costly it is to take the bar exam, there are many things you could ask for that would help alleviate financial concerns. Further, family members and friends are usually happy to help with education-related expenses. Here are five gifts to ask for this holiday season that will help you prepare for the bar exam.

1. Payment on a commercial course

Bar exam commercial courses can be very expensive! Thus, it is an excellent idea to ask for money to contribute to a bar exam course payment.  Some commercial courses offer payment plans and will even accept an installment from a third party. You don’t need to add to your stress by worrying about how you are going to pay for your bar prep course, so don’t be afraid to ask for a commercial course contribution as a gift

2. Study supplements

Outside of the materials provided by your commercial course, it can be very useful to have supplemental materials with a narrower focus. You might be interested in books of MBE questions and strategies if you are struggling with the multiple choice portion. Or maybe a book with past essays and writing tips would be useful for you. If you’re struggling with memorizing the most important law, there are supplements that give you the most highly tested rules and concepts in a more concise fashion than your outlines. Investing in these can be a great boost to your bar prep, and they make excellent gifts too!

3. Office supplies

Depending on the kind of studier you are, you might go through a lot of office supplies during bar prep. Accordingly, a basket of office supplies would make a wonderful bar exam gift!  Pens, pencils, and colored highlighters are incredibly useful for marking up your outlines. Many students go through countless highlighters while studying for the bar. You could also ask for supplies like notecards, binders, paper clips, dividers, etc., depending on how you plan on organizing your materials. This is an affordable gift that is also extremely useful.

4. Gift cards

One thing bar exam takers have very little of is extra time. This makes it hard to complete simple tasks like grocery shopping and cooking. And even when there might be some time for these tasks, many bar exam takers don’t want to use their limited breaks on such dull activities. That’s why gift cards are so great. A gift card to a grocery store, a restaurant, or even a general visa gift card is great. While studying for the bar, you still have to take care of yourself, and gift cards can make that task easier. One less thing for you to worry about!

5. Spa package

A spa trip could be exactly what you need to rejuvenate yourself during bar prep. Sometimes you just need some time for yourself, to relax, and clear your mind. Keeping yourself mentally healthy is just as important as staying physically healthy.  You cannot be expected to retain all of the material you need to if you don’t keep your brain healthy. Taking breaks is exactly what your mind needs to keep it sharp and capable of a high level of performance. A spa package would be an excellent gift to help keep you sane during this stressful time!
