What law schools pay judges; UVA prof under criticism

It was a Good Week for …

Federal appeals judges, after it was revealed that law schools paid 57 active and senior judges nearly $2 million in compensation in 2012, The National Law Journal reported.  Top ranked schools, including Columbia Law School, Duke Law School, Harvard Law School, New York University and Yale Law School, brought the most judges to campus. NYU paid Senior Judge Douglas Ginsburg of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit the most, as he earned $277,906 for teaching for a full semester in 2012. Active judges are capped at earning $26,955 a year above their salary. Judges earn $1,500 to $3,500 per credit for teaching as adjuncts.

Privacy, after student activists at the University of Virginia filed a Freedom of Information Act request for information on UVA law professor Douglas Laycock, who is married to UVa president Teresa Sullivan. The students are critical of Laycock’s support of religious freedom laws that they say could lead to discrimination against the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. They are seeking records on university-funded travel expenses, cellphone records and emails. Laycock supports gay marriage.
