City University of New York School of Law, founded in 1983, is the New York City region’s only public law school. It also has the lowest tuition in the region.
This December, the law school will be making the move from Flushing, N.Y., to Long Island City. The new home, which is still in Queens but closer to Manhattan, is a 14-story “green” building originally constructed by Citigroup as a training facility.
Penelope Andrews, associate dean and professor of law, said the move will allow students to have access to more internships and programs.
The National Jurist ranked CUNY No. 1 for the best public interest program in the nation. In keeping with their public interest mission, the LaunchPad for Justice program enables recent graduates awaiting admission to the Bar to represent unrepresented, indigent clients facing eviction in Housing Court.
Many of CUNY students are immigrants and/or the first in their families to attend college or law school. Approximately 42 percent of this year’s class are African American, Andrews said. And students hail from 9 states and 25 countries.
The 2010 Princeton Review edition of The Best 172 Law Schools places CUNY in first place as chosen by older students, fourth place for most liberal students and tenth place for the best professors.
Though the part-time program was canceled this year, Andrews said there are plans to redevelop the program in 2013.
