Hofstra Law launches program for incoming law school students

Or go to law school …

Choices, choices …

Well, if you’re an incoming fall 2020 student, a new pre-law program offered by Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University could prove invaulable. (And you’ll save on sunscreen!)

The program is to help students develop the critical skills needed to succeed in law school. Hofstra Law’s Edge Ahead: 1L Advantage Program will expose students to the law school experience and train them in legal research and writing, case briefing, note-taking, outlining as well as exam-preparation strategies for both multiple-choice and essay questions.

Edge Ahead will be offered over four weeks and cover three first-year courses — contracts, torts, and legal writing. The program is open to individuals planning on attending any law school in fall 2020.

“We want to ensure that students have a seamless transition to life as law student, whether they are attending Hofstra Law or another law school,” said Judge Gail Prudenti, dean of the Long Island-based law school. “This program will provide them with the tools needed to excel during the critical first year and beyond.”

The program is taught by  full-time Hofstra Law professors.

“Edge Ahead participants will have the confidence needed to hit the ground running on day one of orientation — to get the absolute most out of the transformative law school experience,” said Professor Miriam Albert, director of Edge Ahead. “I wish there had been a program like this when I started law school. It would have eased my nerves and allowed me to jump in with the confidence needed to succeed.”

Course Agenda

Classes will be held on Monday-Thursday from 10:30 a.m. until 3 p.m., starting July 6 and ending July 31. Legal writing will meet daily for 90 minutes; torts will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays for two hours each day; contracts will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays for 2 hours each day.

Lunch is included and will feature guest speakers from the law school community and from the local bench and bar. Fridays will include optional field trips to local courthouses, bar associations, and law firms to continue the students’ exposure to the myriad opportunities available both during law school and after graduation.

Registration and Tuition

This program is open to anyone attending any law school in fall 2020. Class sizes are limited to ensure maximum feedback and personal attention.

Tuition is $2,500, which includes lunch. For any student matriculating at Hofstra Law in August 2020, this fee will be credited to their fall 2020 tuition bill.
