The John Marshall Law School, located in the heart of Chicago’s Loop, sits comfortably in the city’s middle price range and offers all the benefits of the large city and a large school. For example, it offers the most courses after the first year — with a whopping 270 options.
The private, independent school is undergoing a major transformation, as it’s about to become part of the University of Illinois at Chicago. The new law school, to be called John Marshall Law School at UIC, will be the first pubic law school in Chicago.
Founded in 1899, the school is the most diverse law school in Illinois and earned an A ranking in preLaw’s most recent analysis of diversity in the nation’s law schools. The school focuses on providing a well-rounded student life, and offers both night and day classes and a January enrollment.
Inside the classroom, its trial advocacy program is nationally recognized, as is its intellectual property and legal writing programs. Most students enroll in more than one simulation course.
“Our strength is in practical training,” said Dean Darby Dickerson. “That is a space we have lived in since we were founded and it is consistent with the students that we attract who want to be at small firms or judges.”
Students gain lifelong experience at its 10 clinical programs. The law school has a Fair Housing Clinic and a Veteran’s Clinic, both of which have received national attention. John Marshall has other Centers for Excellence such as: Employee Benefits; Real Estate; Information Technology; and International Law and Advocacy. It also participates in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Law School Clinic Certification Program, focusing both on patent and trademark practices.
All students are required to complete three credits — a minimum of 168 hours — of an externship or clinical experience before graduation.
