Southwestern Law School, in the Mid-Wilshire district near downtown Los Angeles, has a strong reputation in entertainment and media law.
The school claims to have more courses, externships and faculty focused on entertainment law than any other law school in the United States. There is even an entertainment and media law summer program in London.
Southwestern Law School Ranks one of the most impressive facilities in the nation. It ranked No. 20 in preLaw magazine’s Best Facilities poll. In the heart of Los Angeles, the school is located in the historical art deco Bullocks Wilshire Building, which housed a luxury department store for more than 60 years. Southwestern Law School’s alumni network is one of its greatest strengths.
The private school, the second largest in the region, has a history of providing access to unrepresented groups — students who might otherwise be unable to attend law school.
The school’s first graduate in 1911 was a woman.
The commitment to providing more access to legal education has led the school to maintain a strong part-time program for parents with child-care and elder-care responsibilities. Southwestern School of Law also has a part-time evening division and a two-year accelerated program.
The school has pioneered in training lawyers who not only understand the law, but also understand how the law works in legal practice on the job, according to Prager.
Southwestern Law School was one of a few schools identified by the 2007 Carnegie Foundation report as being at the forefront of changes in legal education. One area Prager mentioned particularly was a three-track legal writing program in which students can specialize in trial practice, appellate practice or negotiation in their first year. The school also offers a weeklong intersession in January with a dozen one-unit practical courses, such as Courtroom Procedures 101.
