UMemphis launches incubator program for new grads

The University of Memphis School of Law has launched a new incubator program in collaboration with the Memphis Bar Association called Esq.Build.

Esq.Build, designed for new attorneys in their first three years of practice, provides training on how to practice law, and how to manage a law office or small firm.

“Since the job market has been a bit slimmer for young attorneys in recent years, many of our grads are opening their own solo practices, said Ryan Jones, director of communications at the law school. “However, running a solo practice or small office firm is not something that most recent grads are ready to do and do well.”

The program provides young attorneys with office space at a reduced price, mentoring from prominent local attorneys, Continuing Legal Education courses, and a variety of other services to assist them in learning how to effectively run a solo practice or small firm.

“It’s a great example of the school and the legal community coming together to ensure that we have the best possible product on the market, meaning that it’s important to everyone involved that our graduates are expertly equipped, even in hard economic times, to be the best attorneys possible,” Jones said.

Other schools that offer similar programs include CUNY School of Law, California Western School of Law, Thomas Jefferson School of Law, Chicago-Kent College of Law and University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law.
