University of Maryland School of Law Dean Phoebe A. Haddon is the latest recipient of the 2011 Great Teacher Award from the Society of American Law Teachers (SALT). The award seeks to honor progressive law teachers who have worked for justice and diversity.
Haddon is the ninth dean for the University of Maryland School of Law, and previously served as a faculty member at the Temple University Beasley School of Law for 25 years. She is nationally known as a leading law scholar, having co-written two casebooks on constitutional and tort law. She currently serves on the council of the American Bar Association Section on Legal Education and Admission to the Bar.
Haddon has been a leader in the law field from the beginnings of her education. She earned an LL.M. from Yale Law School and a J.D., cum laude, from Duquesne University School of Law, where she was editor-in-chief of the Duquesne Law Review.
“In her scholarship, in her work with organizations dedicated to improving legal education, and in her classroom, Dean Haddon has articulated a compelling vision of the law as a public calling,” said SALT in announcing the award. “ In so doing, she has inspired generations of lawyers who uphold a commitment to public service and community engagement while pursuing careers in an abiding commitment to equal access to justice and fairness.”
Haddon will receive the award at SALT’s annual dinner on Jan. 7.
