The Council of the American Bar Association Section of Legal Education and Admission to the Bar has decided unanimously to continue to consider accrediting law schools outside of the United States.
The Council was convened to respond to issues raised in a report by the Special Committee on Foreign Law Schools Seeking Approval under ABA Standards. The report was widely commented on, bringing the issue to the forefront.
In a motion, Section’s Council stated, “Consistent with the first recommendation of the Kane Committee report and in view of the comments received by the Council with respect to that report, I move that the Council continue with its consideration of the approval of foreign law schools and engaged in our consideration appropriate public and private stakeholders.”
The council noted that although they are considering the idea of accrediting foreign law schools, they will not accept any applications for accreditation until the matter has been settled.
