George Washington prof’s crusade against single-sex dorms hits snag; Hopeful law prof sues to get job

Common sense after George Washington University law professor John Banzhaf lost his case contending that same-sex dorms at the Catholic University violate local discrimination laws.

Banzhaf had filed the complaint after Catholic announced it would move toward single-sex residence halls in an effort to reduce binge drinking and hooking up. He had argued that the policy violated Washington, D.C.’s Human Rights Act, which bars discrimination in housing and public accommodations.
The D.C. Office of Human Rights dismissed the complaint stating that “to follow complainant’s reasoning would include a prohibition on same-sex bathrooms, locker rooms and sports teams, which would lead to absurd results.”

job search etiquette, after Nicholas Spaeth, the former attorney general for North Dakota, sued five more law schools for age discrimination after they failed to consider him for a professor position. Spaeth first sued Michigan State in July, stating that the school refused to interview him because of his age.

He has now added University of Missouri School of Law, University of California Hastings College of the Law, Georgetown University Law Center, University of Iowa College of Law and University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law to his lawsuit.

Spaeth had previously filed complaints with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission against more than 100 law schools that also did not offer him an interview.
