Donated kidneys, Kim Kardashian’s bar exam, and a lawyer contestant on The Bachelor

Three students from the University of Alabama School of Law recently donated their kidneys. Don’t worry, they didn’t wake up in an ice bath in the back room of a gas station. It’s actually for a good cause.

Angelica Mamani, Katrina Smith and Ryne Smith donated their kidneys to complete strangers—not that strange of an occurrence, but still somewhat unexpected. The three students made their decisions without knowing about each other beforehand (well, kind of; the Smiths are a married couple) and found out that the university’s Kidney Center has a non-directed donor program that would help facilitate their desires to be of service, “service” in this case meaning “cut out a vital organ to help a less-fortunate stranger.”

In the end, each donor met with the recipient of their kidney, and keep in touch with them still. All three students are expecting to graduate in May 2022.

Kim Kardashian might be a lawyer soon. No, seriously. The reality star recently passed California’s first-year law students’ exam—colloquially known as the baby bar—and wants to take her education even further. The exam’s success rate hovers around 20%, as evidenced by Kim’s previous three attempts to pass it.

I know it’s easy to clown on the Kardashians (seriously, there are so many things) but it really does seem like Kim is doing this for noble reasons. Her father, Robert, was a lawyer, after all, and was part of the legal team representing OJ Simpson. She has long been critical of how hard the law comes down on first-time offenders, as well as the disproportionate reaction the law has on minority communities.

“My dad would be so proud & he would actually be so shocked to know that this is my path now but he would’ve been my best study partner,” Kim said in a tweet. “I am told he was notorious for making fun of people who didn’t pass on their first attempt like him, but he would’ve been my best cheerleader!”

Another January is here and with it another season of the Bachelor is upon us. One of the crop of this year’s contestants vying for the metaphorical hand of a nebulously qualified white dude is Daria Rose, a third-year law student at Yale Law School. Yale, of all places.

Rose made headlines in 2015 when she was accepted into seven Ivy league colleges, before ultimately choosing Harvard. After graduating in 2019, she elected to go to law school at Yale.

“Move over Elle Woods because Daria is coming for the throne,” exclaims her bio for the show. Rose has had a very active Instagram presence, though she did take a couple months off during the filming of the show between September and November 2021.

Unfortunately, Rose was eliminated in the show’s very first rose ceremony (no pun intended), so that throne remains out of reach for now. I suppose she’ll have to content herself with all the men who would love to date a beautiful high-powered lawyer with a huge social media presence.
