Wilmington University establishes law school

Wilmington University School of Law will become the second law school in Delaware.

The university, which is based in New Castle, has been making plans for the law school for more than a year. Its location and when it will open haven’t been officially announced, but courses could start as early as Fall 2023.

Wilmington University is the third institution in the past year to announce the founding of a law school. It was preceded by Jacksonville University in Florida and High Point University in North Carolina.

Wilmington Law plans to differentiate itself with a very attractive price. Tuition will be $24,000 for full-time students and $18,000 for part-time students, lower than all but a few other law schools. It is about half the price of the only other law school in the state. Widener University Delaware Law School charges $57,000 for full-time students and $43,000 for part-time students.

“My staff and I have decades of experience at other law schools,” said Phillip Closius, dean of the new law school. “However, when we were given the opportunity to help build a program for the school of law at Wilmington University, we committed to being something different.”

Closius previously served as dean at University of Baltimore School of Law and The University of Toledo College of Law.
