Joan Bullock has not exactly enjoyed a smooth career in law school leadership. She was dean and president of Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego when the American Bar Association hit it with sanctions for poor performance in 2017.
As of mid-October, the number of applicants for the Class of 2023 was down 11.7% from the year before. The number of applications had dropped 16.2%, meaning students are applying to fewer schools as well.
Facing the challenge of losing accreditation, the school has taken a bold step. It has drastically reduced this year’s entering class and is giving full-tuition scholarships to all full-time students.
The ABA recently moved to allow schools to increase the number of credit hours a student can take online to one-third of the amount needed for graduation.
