Words and phrases are the tools of the lawyer’s trade. The legal communication process depends upon shared understandings of the professional language, says Steven Gifis, author of Barron’s Law Dictionary.
The sixth edition of “Barron’s Law Dictionary,” published by Barron’s Educational Series, is updated to reflect recent modifications in federal and state law. The book is a quick reference source for lawyers, law students and legal professionals.
Gifis said that in his own experience as a law student, he found that the classis law dictionary “too awkward, bulky and comprehensive to be useful study aids.” He says first year students will find most of the basic terms that they will see in their assignments.
Gifis defines more than 5,000 legal terms, using non-technical language that doesn’t sacrifice legal accuracy. Terms, documented with citations, apply to civil procedure, commercial and contract law, Constitutional law, criminal law, property law and torts.
