The University of Kansas School of Law has received a $1 million gift from Kansas City–based Wagstaff & Cartmell to expand its existing Wagstaff & Cartmell Scholarship Fund, the school announced.
The additional funding will support law students who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership potential and financial need. Preference will be given to students with an interest in litigation and trial advocacy.
The scholarship reflects the firm’s longstanding ties to the region and its focus on developing future trial lawyers.
Tom Cartmell, a 1994 KU Law graduate and partner at the firm, said the investment is intended to help talented students build successful careers while supporting the school’s continued growth.
“As a graduate of KU Law, I know the school has an excellent tradition of preparing its graduates for meaningful careers, and we are excited to help expand that vision,” Cartmell said. “As the school looks ahead to new opportunities, including facilities that will match its excellence, we are proud to play a leading role in supporting that growth.”
Stephen Mazza, dean of the KU School of Law, said the scholarship will open doors for generations of Jayhawk lawyers to get their degree and kicks off a bigger picture fundraising effort for new opportunities.
“Wagstaff & Cartmell has earned a national reputation for excellence in trial and litigation work, and we are beyond grateful they are investing in our students in such a meaningful way,” he said.
