Law Student of the Year: Elizabeth Devolder, Western Michigan University

A few years ago, Elizabeth Devolder made the decision to begin law school as a nontraditional student as she is the mother of two. It’s paid off.

With a nearly perfect GPA of 3.95, it is no surprise that she earned the Highest Grade Recipient Award Certificate of Merit in 10 classes, as well as serving as a teaching assistant.

She serves as the editor-in-chief of the WMU-Cooley Law Review. She also holds a national championship title from the American Bar Association’s 2015 Law Student Division Client Counseling Competition National Finals, in which she competed on a team with her husband, a fellow law student, against a total of 108 teams from 66 ABA-approved law schools.

Additionally, Devolder is a regular speaker at WMU-Cooley Law School’s accepted student days, orientations and other events. She has mentored several female students on academic success, and how to balance work and home life.

In addition to her involvement at WMU-Cooley Law School, she is also a board member with Blaze of Hope, an organization with the mission to provide financial assistance to families of children with a life-threatening medical condition while hospitalized. She has also donated time, goods and resources to various organizations that help underserved children.

“Elizabeth has proven herself as a smart, hardworking, dedicated and determined leader and learner,” said Associate Dean Jeffery Martlew.

Devolder is one of 25 future lawyers honored in the National Jurist’s inaugural “Law Student of the Year” feature.
