Baylor University School of Law announced the creation of a Family Law Clinic that will open in Fall 2024. The clinic, its seventh, will focus on serving clients who will represent themselves in court.
Self-representing, or pro se clients have been increasing in popularity in recent years across different socioeconomic backgrounds. Other organizations have helped provide resources for pro se litigators in the past, but frequently the forms and processes can be confusing. The main goal behind the Family Law Clinic at Baylor Law is to address pain points for pro se litigants.
In creating the clinic, Baylor Law faculty wanted to emphasize legal procedures and the importance of certain documents. It is common for pro se litigators to fail to provide the right evidence, or to fill out the wrong form.
The clinic will be run out of the McLennan County Courthouse and assist pro se litigants in drafting and reviewing often confusing legal documents in preparation for family court proceedings.
To be accommodating to as many pro se litigators as possible, the Family Law Clinic will offer different ways to get assistance. Patrons can either do a walk-in at courthouse during the clinic’s operating hours or they can schedule an appointment through phone or email. Also, to ensure that everyone is getting the assistance they need, forms will be translated into Spanish.
The clinic was created through the financial assistance of the Texas Bar Foundation.
