A jury in Florida found Charlie Adelson guilty of the 2014 murder of Dan Markel, a Florida State University law professor.
At the time of the murder, Markel was in a bitter custody dispute with his ex-wife, Wendi Adelson, who had previously taught at Florida State. The jury found that Charlie Adelson, Wendy’s brother, hired two hitman to kill Markel. They shot Markel in his driveway in Tallahassee.
The two hitmen were part of the Latin Kings gang and both were previously convicted of murder in connection with the case.
Adelson, a dentist, attempted to convince the jury that the two hitmen did all the planning, and he was simply coerced into the situation. He was found guilty of first-degree murder as well as conspiracy and soliciting the murder. Adelson’s sentence is the maximum sentence of life in prison.
Within a week after the verdict, Donna Adelson, Charlie and Wendy’s mother, was arrested at the airport as she attempted to flee the country. Prosecutors believe she was behind the murder as well.
