Nebraska Law announces Public Interest Scholars Program

University of Nebraska College of Law has launched a new Public Interest Scholars Program for prospective students applying for admission to the school in 2023.

The schools said the new program reflects its commitment to developing inclusive leaders who advance justice, solve problems and serve with integrity. The program will be made up of students who have shown they are dedicated to public service. It will provide those students with financial support, mentors, individual assistance and opportunities for networking.

“When we drafted the college’s strategic plan in 2019, one of our goals was to become the best place in America for students interested in public interest work and public service,” said Richard Moberly, dean of Nebraska Law. “The new Public Interest Scholars Program is an important step in achieving that goal. It further strengthens our commitment to advancing justice and will help students build the skills they need to become leaders within the Nebraska Law community, and eventually, the public interest legal community.”

Some of the benefits of being in the program include alumni mentors, a half-tuition scholarship, funding for unpaid summer public interest internships and other exclusive events and opportunities that will advance students in their network. The program also guarantees students a seat in one of the law college clinics in their third year.

Those who are interested in the program should complete a separate essay when applying for admission that describes their public service commitments, career goals and factors that have influenced them in their path.

Candidates will be evaluated primarily on “demonstrated interest, experience and commitment to public service along with leadership potential,” according to the school’s website.

Students should apply before November 15 and can learn more about the program here.
