Northeastern Law extends its Flex-JD to prospective students across the nation

Northeastern University School of Law, in Boston, has extended its FlexJD program to prospective students across the nation beginning in Fall 2023.

The four-year part-time program is designed for working professionals who intend to continue full-time employment while pursuing a law degree. This year it was only open to students in the Boston area, but now students from across the nation can apply. The American Bar Association-approved program consists of a mix of remote coursework with live online lectures. Students will be assigned weekly flexible assignments that they can complete on their own schedule.

Additionally, the program only requires six on-campus visits spread throughout the four-year program. During these visits, students will have the opportunity to interact with their classmates and instructors in networking opportunities.

“Now that I am about halfway through my 1L year in the program, I can confidently say the FlexJD program was the right choice for me to pursue my legal education,” said Rachel Vierra, a student in the program. “While the courses do require time outside of class to prepare and complete assignments, the workload has been compatible with my employment. The FlexJD schedule allows for this flexibility in determining one’s schedule.”

The program aims to support Northeastern Law’s commitment to educating a diverse student body. Students in the program will participate in the school’s Cooperative Legal Education Program, which connects them to working with more than 1,000 employers across the globe.

“Our FlexJD students have embraced the self-paced and online coursework since the program launched for Boston-area students in fall 2021,” said Dean James Hackney in a press release. “This is an exciting time for working professionals who want to earn a law degree on their own schedule and take advantage of our leadership in practical legal training. The FlexJD program makes a first-rate legal education accessible to students wherever they are.”

Students in the program will experience the same first-year curriculum as full-time JD students and have access to clinical opportunities and skill-building courses.

Before applying to the program, students should check with the jurisdictions in which they seek admission to the bar, to confirm that graduation from the program will make them eligible to take the exam in those jurisdictions.
