William M. Carter Jr. will be the next dean of the University of Pittsburgh School of Law when he takes over in July. Carter is a former faculty member at Temple University- James E. Beasley School of Law and Case Western Reserve University School of Law, his alma mater.
In an interview with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Carter was reluctant to announce specific goals for the law school prior to consulting his future colleagues, but expressed dissatisfaction with the law school’s current lack of diversity. Carter also acknowledged recent calls to reform legal education in favor of more practical skills training. Although expressing a desire to implement more practical training, he defended the classical legal theory model, adding that the two types of education were not inconsistent.
• Bryant Garth has retired from his duties as dean and CEO of Southwestern Law School after seven years. Some of his accomplishments as dean include the establishment of three new clinics at the law school and the creation of the law school’s first on-campus student housing complex. Garth will return to full-time research and scholarship.
