UC Berkeley dean resigns after sexual harassment charges come to light

It was a BAD week for hiding sexual harrassment, after the dean at UC Berkeley School of Law resigned amid allegations of sexual harassment.

Sujit Choudhry allegedly harassed his executive secretary from September 2014 to March 2015. The assistant, Tyann Sorrell, filed a lawsuit against the school and dean alleging that Choudhry hugged, kissed or caressed her multiple times per week. She claims that supervisors failed to stop Choudhry after she complained and tried to retaliate.

A campus investigation last summer found that Choudhry’s behavior violated the university’s sexual harassment policies. But he was allowed to stay as dean.

University Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Claude Steele said a “combination of disciplinary actions, monitoring of his behavior and formal training would be an appropriate and effective response, and would produce the necessary changes in his behavior.”

But the law faculty was outraged when the lawsuit came to light and that led to Choudhry’s resignation.
