USC Gould School of Law launches new degree in data science

University of Southern California Gould School of Law and the USC School of Advanced Computing have launched a Master of Science in Data Science and Law, now open for enrollment.

The joint graduate degree is designed for students who want to merge data science, legal analysis and emerging technology issues.

The 32‑unit program prepares students to apply data science and machine learning methods to legal problems involving data, privacy and regulatory environments. Coursework covers data systems, document analysis, privacy protection, policy issues and related areas.

“By pairing rigorous data science training with the legal and policy context that shapes real-world systems, we’re preparing students to tackle high-stakes challenges in areas like privacy, regulation and responsible AI,” said Emilio Ferrara, director of USC’s interdisciplinary data science program.

Graduates may pursue roles in law firms, technology companies, consulting organizations and regulatory agencies. Career paths include analytics and research in legal settings, advising on data privacy and protection and policy work in data ethics and governance.

The degree does not qualify graduates to sit for a U.S. bar exam or practice law, and credits cannot be applied toward a J.D.
