Every year, University of Houston Law Center’s Blakely Advocacy Institute releases its rankings of the top law schools for moot court, and this year’s list features some big changes.
Loyola University Chicago School of Law leaped from 14th to claim the top spot, while University of Miami School of Law jumped from 12th to tie for third. Texas Tech University School of Law made one of the largest moves in the rankings, rising from 36th to seventh.
What’s behind the dramatic movement? According to the law schools, the answer is not about chasing rankings; it’s about consistency, coaching and preparing students for real-world legal practice.
Moot court is a special breed of law school activity because it’s the closest analogue to actual law practice during the three-year process. The difference is that it allows students to refine the art of arguing a case without having to worry about real-world consequences.
