Every law student eventually develops a study ritual. Some claim the same seat in the library every day. Others swear by color-coded outlines, oversized coffee mugs or lucky hoodies that somehow survived first year. Another study essential is making the list: the perfect playlist.
Music has become more than something to fill the silence while reading hundreds of pages of case law. For many students, it creates the atmosphere needed to concentrate, block distractions, recharge after a long day or find just enough motivation to push through one more chapter before calling it a night.
The good news? You do not have to build that soundtrack from scratch.
Why music matters
According to National University, a private nonprofit institution in San Diego, California, focused on adult-oriented higher education, music’s benefits go beyond entertainment. Music can help lower stress levels, reduce test anxiety and boost performance in high-pressure situations such as final exams.
Study session soundtracks
One playlist rarely fits every assignment. Reviewing flashcards before class calls for something different than reading a 40-page appellate opinion.
Fortunately, there are playlists for all those moments. Spotify features several collections curated specifically with law students in mind. A simple search for top playlists for law students and several options appear.
One public playlist on Spotify is “law school studying.” With more than 200 tracks and a runtime of 12 hours and 32 minutes, it offers calm, unobtrusive music that fades into the background while keeping the energy steady.
Having a long playlist ensures repetition rarely becomes a distraction, making it an ideal companion for those weekends when your syllabus seems to have doubled overnight.
Lawyers have playlists too
The Ohio State Bar Association created the “Ohio Lawyers Study Session” playlist on Spotify for students preparing for exams. The Cleveland State University Law Library recommends several legal-themed listening options, including Above the Law’s “Law School Finals Playlist” along with “Law School Study Music” on YouTube for students who simply want a calming soundtrack behind their reading. The “Florida Lawyer Well-Being” playlist on Apple Music focuses on relaxation and stress reduction, reminding students that recovery is just as important as preparation. Sometimes the smartest study strategy is knowing when to close the laptop and let your brain rest.
More than one way to listen
One search on Spotify and Lo-Fi surfaces as the unofficial soundtrack of modern studying. Mixing mellow hip hop beats with jazz influences, it creates a consistent rhythm without competing for your attention. This could be a favorite among students tackling everything from Torts outlines to bar exam preparation.
Classical music remains another choice. And then there is white noise, which technically is not music at all. But for students studying in busy libraries, coffee shops or apartments with noisy roommates, white noise can mask distractions and create an environment where concentration comes a little easier.
From the vault
Vault Law has organized its own playlists on Spotify around different study moods. Go to vault.com and search “playlists” for its blog posts that contain lists to some study music favorites. Need a little energy before diving into Civil Procedure? Try “Pop Pump-Ups.” Trying to stay motivated during a lengthy outlining session? “Upbeat Study Tunes” may help maintain momentum. Ready to decompress after spending eight hours with your casebooks? “Wind Down Mode” lives up to its name with calmer selections for relaxation.
Find your rhythm
Every law student studies differently. Some prefer silence, while others start with upbeat tracks for motivation and switch to instrumental music for deeper concentration.
Find what works for you. You may discover that your best study partner isn’t across the table … it’s in your headphones. Sometimes, the right soundtrack is more than background noise.
