University of Toledo Law launches post-conviction relief clinic for students

The University of Toledo College of Law has launched the Beyond Conviction Clinic, giving students hands-on legal experience while helping individuals overcome barriers created by criminal records.

Through the new clinic, students assist clients seeking post-conviction relief, including record sealing and expungement, certificates of qualification for employment or housing, and expedited pardons. The program provides practical legal training while helping clients pursue greater access to employment, housing, education and other opportunities.

The clinic is a partnership between Toledo Law and the Toledo Legal Aid Society, which serves as Lucas County’s public defender office. Toledo Law joined Ohio’s Governor’s Expedited Pardon Project in February, expanding opportunities for students to gain experience while serving the community.

The clinic reflects the College of Law’s commitment to experiential education and community engagement.

“Toledo Law is committed to community engagement, public service and preparing students to address real-world legal challenges through experience-based learning opportunities,” Dean Rebecca Zietlow said. “Our Beyond Conviction Clinic joins a robust roster of clinics and externships that support our region’s legal needs while presenting our students with invaluable opportunities for hands-on learning.”

Led by adjunct professor Maggie Humphrey, who also serves as director of training and outreach for the Toledo Legal Aid Society, the clinic helps students understand the lasting impact a criminal record can have on employment, housing, education, voting rights and family relationships. Students meet with clients, evaluate their legal options, draft motions and gain direct experience navigating post-conviction relief processes under attorney supervision.

With growing demand for legal assistance among individuals who cannot afford representation, Humphrey said the clinic will benefit both students and the community.
